Get the text out of Quizlet

Quizlet lets the person who made a set export it, on the website (Quizlet Help Center).

  1. On the Quizlet website, open your set, choose the more menu (…) and then Export.
  2. Keep Tab between term and definition and New line between rows.
  3. Choose Copy text and paste it into the box above.

A definition that runs over several lines arrives as extra lines with no tab. The fixer joins each such line to the definition above it. If you chose other separators in Quizlet, such as a comma and a semicolon, the fixer finds those too, or you can pick them.

Get the text out of Anki

In Anki on a computer, choose File, Export, then Notes in Plain Text (Anki manual, exporting). Choose the file above.

Newer versions of Anki start the file with settings lines such as #separator:tab and #deck column:2. The fixer reads them: it uses that separator and leaves the deck, note type and tags columns out of the column choices it starts with. Fields Anki put in quotation marks, with commas or line breaks inside, stay one field.

What the fixer cleans up

  • One separator for the whole file, as Lexpad’s importer chooses it: a tab if the file has one, otherwise the first line decides between comma and semicolon. You can override it.
  • Quoted fields: a comma, tab or line break inside quotation marks stays in the field, and "" becomes one quotation mark.
  • HTML from Anki: <br> and paragraph ends become line breaks, other tags are removed, &quot; and other entities become the characters they stand for, and [sound:…] references go.
  • A line break inside a field becomes “; ”, so each card stays on one row.
  • A first row such as Term, Definition or Front, Back is left out, and empty rows go. A row with a meaning but no word is counted and left out.

The file you download

  • CSV for Lexpad (words-for-lexpad.csv): a word, meaning heading, then one row per card, with a comma between the two and quotation marks only where a field needs them. UTF-8.
  • In Lexpad: open the notebook, then Settings, Import & export, Import words. Words already in the notebook are skipped and counted, and importing is free.
  • For Anki (words-for-anki.txt): the same two columns separated by tabs, with settings lines Anki 2.1.54 and later read. In Anki: File, Import.

More on moving a whole collection, and what does not come across, is in Move your Anki or Quizlet words.

What it does not do

  • This tool reads text only, so it cannot open Anki’s .apkg or .colpkg packages: export Notes in Plain Text instead. Lexpad’s own Import words reads an .apkg deck directly.
  • Images, sounds, tags and review history do not come across; only the two columns you choose.
  • It never writes a word or a meaning for you. If a card has no meaning, the row keeps an empty meaning.
  • It cannot export a Quizlet set you did not make: Quizlet only lets the set’s creator export it.

Good to know

Questions

Why does my Quizlet export break when I open it in Excel?

When a definition holds the separator you chose, or a line break, the rows no longer line up. The fixer joins broken lines back together and writes quotation marks around any field that needs them, so spreadsheets and Lexpad read one card per row.

Are my words uploaded?

No. The page reads the text in your browser and keeps nothing.

Can it convert an Anki .apkg file?

No, this tool reads text only. In Anki, export Notes in Plain Text and use that file. Moving the deck to Lexpad? Lexpad’s own Import words reads the .apkg file directly.

My meaning is in the first column. What do I do?

Choose Swap columns, or pick the word and meaning columns yourself. The preview shows the result at once.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account and no limit.
