The five boxes

Lexpad uses the Leitner system. A new word starts in box 1. Each box has a waiting time before the word comes back: today, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days and 21 days. Know it and it moves up one box; miss it and it goes back to box 1, to be asked again today. Box 5 counts as mastered and still returns every 21 days. Days follow your own time zone.

  2. Box 21 day
  3. Box 33 days
  4. Box 47 days

Six kinds of card

New words start with recognition cards; recall and spelling unlock once a word reaches box 2, and a word marked hard to spell gets the spelling drill more often.

A flashcard, turned over

Flashcard

See the word, turn it over, say whether you knew it.

Recall

See the meaning, recall the word.

Multiple choice

Pick the word for a meaning from four, with the wrong options taken from your own notebook.

Example cloze

Find the word missing from one of its example sentences.

Spelling drill

Type the word, with a letter mask to guide you.

Listening

Hear the word with no text, then recall it, in the Audio only deck.

Typed answers

Typing strictness is Exact, Allow one typo (the default) or Lenient. Case, accents, bracketed asides and punctuation never count against you, “sb” and “sth” match “somebody” and “something”, and either half of an answer like “big / large” is accepted.

Focused decks

  • Daily practice: words that are due, earliest first, then new words.
  • Audio only, Starred, Struggling words (stuck in box 1), Confusables (pairs you keep mixing up) and Hard spellings.
  • By level, by topic or by kind, such as phrasal verbs or idioms.
  • Any filtered or searched selection of the notebook, one word and its relatives, or the words you just added.
  • With several notebooks, practise one or all of them; each notebook’s cards run together, so the language and voice never switch card by card.

Retired words appear in no deck.

Try it in Lexpad

  1. On Today, under Focused practice, tap By topic or level.
  2. Choose a level such as B2, a kind such as Phrasal verbs, or a topic.
  3. The session uses only those words.

During a session

  • A card you miss comes back once at the end of the session.
  • Undo is there for a few seconds after each answer.
  • The box meter moves up in gold or back in red, so you see the schedule working; a word reaching box 5 gets a small celebration.
  • Open the whole word card, add a note or star a word without leaving.
  • On a phone, swipe a turned card left or right.
  • The summary shows cards, accuracy and your streak, the words worth another look, and how many more are waiting if you want to keep going.

Self-test in the notebook

Switch Meanings off in the Show row on the notebook screen to test yourself anywhere in it. Your “Knew it” and “Didn’t know” count as real answers and move the words through the boxes.

Try it in Lexpad

  1. Open Notebook.
  2. In the Show row, switch Meanings off.
  3. Tap a word to reveal it.
  4. Answer Knew it or Didn’t know; the box moves as in a session.

Offline and across devices

Practice works without a connection and syncs later. If two devices disagree about a word, the lower box wins, so syncing never makes a word look better learned than it is.

You can also practise from ChatGPT or Claude: answers you give in the chat are recorded as practice and count for your boxes and streak.

Good to know

Questions

What happens when I get a word wrong?

It goes back to box 1 and is asked again today; within a session a missed card also comes back once at the end.

Is mastered the end?

No. Box 5 still returns every 21 days, so a mastered word stays fresh.

Do retired words come back?

No deck includes them. Bring a word back from its page whenever you like.
