Languages and scripts

Any language you meet,
set the way it should be.

Lexpad does not assume you are learning English. Every notebook has a language you are learning and a language for meanings, chosen from 81, in any pair.

Right to left

Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Urdu and Pashto read right to left. Direction is set for each piece of text, not for the whole screen, so an English word with a Persian meaning shows each side the right way round. Text you type takes its direction from its first letter. Kurdish is written in Latin script, left to right.

A font for every writing system

  • Latin text and the interface: Schibsted Grotesk.
  • Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese: Inter.
  • Persian, Arabic and Urdu: Vazirmatn.
  • Hebrew, Armenian, Georgian, Devanagari, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Sinhala, Thai, Lao, Khmer, Myanmar and Ethiopic: a Noto Sans face each.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean: your device’s own fonts, with a separate choice for each, since a character is drawn differently in each tradition.

The fonts are served by Lexpad itself, never from a font service. On the web, each one downloads the first time its script appears, so you only fetch what you read; the Android app carries them all and works offline. Letter spacing is applied only to Latin, Cyrillic and Greek, so Arabic letters stay joined and Indic conjuncts stay whole.

Details that matter

Small rules that keep every language right.

Texts without spaces

Pasting Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Lao, Khmer or Burmese text splits it into words, so you can pick new words from it like any other language.

Hearing words

Pronunciation uses your device’s voices in each language’s own locale. Where a device has no voice for a language, the speaker button and the Audio deck simply do not appear.

Accents and marks

Letters that change a word are kept: “año” and “ano”, “schön” and “schon” are different words, and so are Thai and Indic words that differ by a vowel mark. Search forgives accents, so “cafe” still finds “café”.

AI in many languages

AI cards, Words worth keeping and Lex work in every pair. They are strongest in widely used languages; for less common ones, check the card and use Refine or edit it by hand.

Free in Persian

Every Pro feature is free in a notebook with Persian on either side, whether you are learning Persian or learning another language through it. The rule follows the notebook, not the account.

هر قابلیت Pro در دفترچه‌ای که یک طرفش فارسی است رایگان است.

Every Pro feature is free in a notebook with Persian on either side.

Good to know

Questions

Can I learn English through Persian, or Persian through English?

Both. Any pair works, and a notebook with Persian on either side gets every Pro feature free.

Is Kurdish right to left?

Lexpad treats Kurdish as Latin script, left to right.
