Quick answer: Anki or Quizlet?
Neither is better at everything. Start from what you need to do.

|---|---|---|
| Keep a language’s words for months or years | Anki | Long-term spaced repetition is what it is built for, with FSRS one switch away in the deck options. |
| Learn a course list before a test | Quizlet | Make or find the set in a minute, then use Learn, practice tests and games. |
| Start free on iPhone | Quizlet | Its iPhone app is free, with Quizlet Plus sold in the app. AnkiMobile costs $24.99 on the US App Store; AnkiWeb is free in the browser. |

| Share sets with a class | Quizlet | Teachers can share sets with a class, and many course sets already exist. |
| Design your own card layouts | Anki | Note types and templates can show a sentence, audio, an image or the reverse direction. |
| Keep the words you meet yourself, with the card written for you | Lexpad (ours) | Add a word; AI writes meanings, examples and pronunciation; Leitner boxes or FSRS-6 (Beta) bring it back. |

Where Anki is better
- Keeping words for years. Anki is built around long-term spaced repetition, with a modern scheduler (FSRS) one switch away and settings for every part of it.
- Price. The computer version, AnkiDroid and AnkiWeb sync are free; only the iPhone app is paid.
- Control. Card templates can show the word, a sentence, audio, an image, the reverse direction: anything you design.
- Any subject. The same tool works for kanji, grammar, anatomy or code.
Where Quizlet is better
- Getting started. Make or find a set and start in a minute; there is nothing to configure.
- Ready-made sets. If your class or textbook has a set, someone has often made it already.
- Variety before a test. Learn, practice tests and games make a fixed list less dull.
- Classes. Teachers can share sets with a class.
What matters most for a language
For vocabulary, three things decide more than features:
- Will the words come back for months? A word you learn for Friday’s test and never see again is gone by spring. Long-term spacing is Anki’s strength.
- Whose words are they? Course sets fit a course. The words you meet in your own reading, series and conversations are in nobody’s set, so you will be making cards either way.
- How long does one card take? If writing a card takes minutes, you will save fewer words than you meet. Both apps can help: Anki with shared decks and add-ons, Quizlet with AI from notes.
For the review load that comes with any spaced-repetition app, see how many new words a day.
A third option (ours)
Lexpad, which we make, sits between the two for one job: the words you meet yourself. You type or save a word from a web page, an app on your computer, a Kindle or a chat with ChatGPT or Claude; AI writes the card; five Leitner boxes, or the optional Smart schedule built on FSRS, bring it back. It does vocabulary only, has no ready-made sets, and has no iPhone app yet (it runs in Safari). Compare it with each: Lexpad vs Anki, Lexpad vs Quizlet.
Moving words between them
Both can hand over plain text. Quizlet exports a set you made as text with a tab between term and definition (Quizlet Help Center), and Anki imports tab-separated text files (Anki manual, text files). Going to Lexpad from either: it imports an Anki deck (.apkg) as it is and takes a pasted Quizlet export (move your Anki or Quizlet words). To tidy an export first (quotes, HTML, line breaks inside a definition), use the free Quizlet and Anki export fixer. Review history does not travel between apps.
Good to know
Questions
Is Anki better than Quizlet for vocabulary?
For keeping words over months and years, Anki’s spaced repetition is stronger. For a fixed course list you need quickly, Quizlet is faster to start. Many learners use Quizlet for class and a spaced-repetition app for their own words.
Is Anki free?
On Windows, Mac and Linux, on Android (AnkiDroid) and in the browser (AnkiWeb), yes. The iPhone app, AnkiMobile, costs $24.99 on the US App Store.
Does Quizlet use spaced repetition?
Its App Store listing says it resurfaces what you need to review when you need it. Anki and other spaced-repetition apps show or let you set each card’s interval.
Can I move my Quizlet sets to Anki?
Yes, sets you made: export the set from the Quizlet website as text and import the file in Anki with tab as the separator. Progress does not come across.
Which is easier for a beginner?
Quizlet. Anki pays off once you have learned its settings; start with its defaults and a small deck.
Which is better on iPhone, Anki or Quizlet?
To start free, Quizlet: its iPhone app is free, with Quizlet Plus sold in the app. Anki’s iPhone app, AnkiMobile, costs $24.99 on the US App Store; AnkiWeb works free in the browser and syncs with the free Anki on a computer.
Can I use Anki and Quizlet together?
Yes. Keep a course set in Quizlet for the test, and move the words you want to keep for good into Anki: export a set you made as text and import it in Anki with tab as the separator. Progress does not come across.
