for language learning

People who leave Quizlet for language learning usually want one of three things: a schedule that brings words back at the right time, a cheaper or free plan, or a place for the words they meet themselves rather than someone else’s set. Anki, Brainscape, Knowt, Lexpad (our own app), Mochi, Noji and RemNote each cover a different mix of those, and each can be used without paying: Anki is free everywhere except its iPhone app, and the other six have free plans or free versions with paid extras.

What Quizlet does well, and what learners miss

Quizlet is good at sets. You can type or paste your own, or find one that another learner or a teacher made for your course, and study it with Learn, practice tests and flashcards. Its iPhone listing now mentions spaced repetition too (App Store listing, checked 12 October 2026).

Language learners still look elsewhere, mostly because:

  • The price of Plus. The US App Store lists Quizlet Plus at $9.99 and $44.99 (App Store, 12 October 2026). Quizlet’s own upgrade page did not load for our check, so web prices may differ.
  • Sets are made for courses. A set follows a textbook chapter. The words you meet in a novel, a series or at work are not in anyone’s set.
  • Long-term review. Quizlet is built around studying a set before a test. Vocabulary needs the opposite: short reviews that keep going for months.

If you study for a class with shared sets, Quizlet may still be the best fit. Lexpad vs Quizlet compares the two side by side.

How to choose

  1. Do you need sets made by others? For a school course, yes: Knowt, Brainscape and Anki’s shared decks have them. For the words you meet in your own life, no set exists; a notebook you fill yourself, such as Lexpad, fits better.
  2. Do you want to keep words for months? Then the schedule matters more than the games. Anki, Brainscape, Mochi, RemNote and Lexpad all space reviews out; Lexpad shows the day each word comes back.
  3. How much typing will you do? Anki and Mochi expect you to write each card. Lexpad writes meanings, examples and pronunciation when you add a word; you can edit everything.
  4. Which language? Check that your language pair displays well. Lexpad supports 81 languages in any pair, with right-to-left text on its own side of the card.

Bringing your Quizlet sets along

Quizlet lets the creator of a set export it from the website: open the set, choose Export from the more menu, and copy the text, with a tab between term and definition (Quizlet Help Center). Sets you copied from someone else cannot be exported. Most alternatives can read that text. In Lexpad, open Settings, Import & export, Paste a list, paste the text as it is, check the first cards and add them; or save it as a .txt file and use Import words. The steps are in move your Anki or Quizlet words. Still deciding between the two big names? Anki vs Quizlet.

Good to know

Questions

What is a free alternative to Quizlet for language learning?

Anki is free on computers and Android. Brainscape, Knowt, Mochi, Noji and RemNote have free plans or free versions with paid extras. Lexpad’s free plan keeps unlimited words with every card type and both schedules; Pro is optional.

Is there a Quizlet alternative without AI?

Anki writes nothing for you: every card is what you type or import. In Lexpad, AI writes only when you tap Fill with AI, so you can type every card yourself.

Is there a free Quizlet alternative with a Learn mode?

Knowt says its Learn mode is free. Anki, Brainscape, Mochi, Noji, RemNote and Lexpad each have their own review modes on their free plans.

Which Quizlet alternative can import my sets?

Knowt says it can bring your Quizlet sets over. Anki, Lexpad and most others can import the plain text Quizlet exports for sets you created.

Is Quizlet good for learning vocabulary?

For a set of words from a course, yes. For keeping the words you meet yourself over months, a tool built around spaced repetition and your own entries usually works better.

Does Lexpad have ready-made word sets?

No, on purpose. Lexpad is for the words you meet yourself. You can import your own Quizlet sets, and anyone can share a notebook by link.
