Google Meet captions

Save the words you hear
in Google Meet.

Lexpad saves the words you choose from Google Meet’s live captions, one at a time, each with the caption line it was said in. It keeps no transcript. Rest your pointer on the captions and they hold still, so you can click the word you just heard.

How it works

  1. Turn captions on in the call. In Google Meet, turn captions on with the CC button. Lexpad reads them only while they are on.
  2. Rest the pointer on the captions. A still copy of the last lines appears over them, so the words stop moving while the call goes on.
  3. Look back if you missed it. “Earlier” in the still copy shows the last ten lines, for a word said a moment ago.
  4. Click a word. The Lexpad card opens with the meaning, part of speech, level and pronunciation, written by AI.
  5. Add it. Press Add to Lexpad or Enter. Move the pointer away and the live captions carry on.

Nothing changes in the call. The still copy is drawn only on your screen, and your keys stay Meet’s.

What is saved, and what never is

Each word you add goes into your own notebook and comes back for practice on a schedule.

The word and its meanings

As the card showed them, ready to edit in your notebook.

The caption line

The line the word was said in becomes its example.

“Google Meet” and the date

The only note. Speaker names, the meeting link, its code and its title are never saved.

Privacy in the call

  • While the call goes on, nothing about it leaves your browser. A word is sent, with its caption line, only when you click it, so the meaning can be written.
  • The last ten caption lines are kept only in the page’s memory, and gone when the page closes or you switch the feature off.
  • Lexpad reads what was said, never who said it.
  • The extension never touches your microphone, your camera or the meeting’s controls.
  • Read the privacy policy.

Using it at work

Meetings are where a working language grows fastest, and where you can least stop to look a word up. A few habits help:

  1. Save phrases, not only single words. “Keep the momentum going” is easier to reuse than “momentum” alone.
  2. Keep a few per meeting. The words colleagues use again and again are the ones worth having.
  3. Review them before the next call. On the commute in the Android app, or on Today in the web app; each word comes back on growing gaps.
  4. Catch the rest of the day too. In e-mails and documents, select a word with the extension, or press ⌘⇧L or Ctrl+Shift+L in any app with Lexpad for Mac and Windows.

Switch it off

In the Lexpad menu, under Meetings, Click words in Google Meet captions is on at first; turn it off and Meet is left alone. The small ⋯ in the still copy turns Lexpad off on Meet altogether, until you turn it back on from the menu.

Good to know

Questions

Does it record my meeting?

No. It reads Google Meet’s captions on your screen while they are on, keeps the last ten lines in the page’s memory, and saves only a word you click, with its line, “Google Meet” and the date. It keeps no transcript.

Can the others in the call see it?

Only if you share your screen. The still copy and the card are drawn on your own screen, and nothing in the meeting changes.

Which languages work?

Whatever language Google Meet writes the captions in. Lexpad splits the words in any script, and the card is written in your notebook’s languages.

Do I need captions on?

Yes. Turn them on with Meet’s CC button; Lexpad reads them only while they are on.

Is it free?

Yes. The extension is free on every plan and works with a free Lexpad account. Each meaning uses your AI allowance (25 AI cards a day (400 a month) on Free).

Can I keep it off in some calls?

Yes. Turn off Click words in Google Meet captions in the Lexpad menu, or use the ⋯ in the still copy to turn Lexpad off on Meet.

Does it work on my phone?

The extension is for Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer. The words you save are in your notebook on the web, in the Android app and in Lexpad for Mac and Windows.
